The XVIII Áltima Conference, held on November 15 in Barcelona with the scientific support of the WeCare Chair, brought together nearly 300 professionals at the ONCE Auditorium to discuss strategies for supporting the suffering of patients, families, and professionals. After a welcome by Áltima and the Chair’s Direction, Dr. Ingrid Bullich, a nurse, delivered the lecture “Shared Suffering: Because Sharing is Living,” offering an innovative and emotional exploration of everyday experiences of suffering in healthcare.
In the second part, simultaneous workshops were held, such as “Supporting Families Without Losing Yourself” by psychologist Bernat Carreras from Hospital Clínic, “Supporting Professionals in Suffering” by Ainhoa Videgain, and “Supporting Grief.” These workshops provided practical tools to enhance the skills of professionals.
Finally, the short film “París 70” by director Dani Feixa was presented, focusing on the relationship between a patient with Alzheimer’s and her son, the primary caregiver, highlighting the special bond created by celebrating life at its end. Dr. Mireia Baylina closed the event with the lecture “Accompanying the Journey: Reflections Inspired by París 70,” emphasizing the caregiver-patient relationship and how personal resources can enhance the caregiving experience.
