On May 5 and 6, 2022, the XXVII Aragonese Conference on Geriatrics and Gerontology was held in Zaragoza. Both Dr Cristina Monforte and Dr Iris Crespo were invited to participate in a roundtable discussion moderated by Dr Rogelio Altisent, Director of the Chair of Medical Professionalism at the University of Zaragoza and vice president of the Bioethics Spanish Committee.
Dr Cristina Monforte, co-director of the WeCare Chair, nurse and lecturer in the Nursing Department, and vice-rector of Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer at UIC Barcelona, gave the presentation ‘The desire to hasten death in patients with advanced disease. Situation management’. In this lecture, Dr Monforte presented a conceptualisation of the wish to hasten death (WTHD), along with some of the WTHD related factors.
Dr Iris Crespo, researcher at the WeCare Chair and lecturer in the Department of Basic Sciences at UIC Barcelona, gave the lecture ‘Approach to the desire to hasten death: lessons learned’ about the frequency of the WTHD in the elderly and in patients with advanced diseases.
The roundtable was accompanied by the screening of a video of a clinical case, in which an elderly nursing home patient was observed expressing his desire to hasten death to one of the nurses in the centre. This was then followed by a discussion with attendees about the video.
