Today, April 19th, begins the 2nd Edition of the specialization course “Evaluation and Response to the Desire to Advance Death in People with Advanced Disease (ERDAM)”, offered by the WeCare Chair. The program lasts 10 weeks and ends on June 28th.
The course is aimed at physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and other healthcare professionals who work with patients who express wishes to advance death.
The aim of the course is to train health professionals in the early detection of the wish to advance death and meaningful response in a clinical context. Participants will acquire theoretical knowledge about the aspects that underlie the occurrence of the wish to anticipate death and will improve their ability to conduct complex conversations in a clinical context.
The program methodology is online and includes theoretical and expository classes, the resolution of clinical cases through videos with simulated patients, face-to-face sessions, study of relevant articles, participation in discussion forums and follow-up tutorials.
The content of the program covers topics such as the conceptual and epidemiological aspects of the wish to advance death, the clinical exploration of the wish, the clinical response to the wish, the family in the face of the wish to advance death and the ethical, anthropological and legal aspects of the request for the wish to advance death in Spain.
In addition, the Chair has already planned the launch of the 3rd Edition of the course, which will take place on October 4th.

“I think it is a great course, highly topical and highly recommended for any professional who works accompanying people at the end of life. The methodology is intense and with a very practical character, which guarantees to a great extent the learning and the achievement of the objectives.
The teaching staff is very experienced, close and available.
Of great value are the face-to-face sessions to be able to share with other colleagues and the great practical applicability of what has been learned.
My congratulations for the great effort to the whole team that has prepared the material, theoretical, practical and audiovisual.”

“I am not a fan of online training, but this specific course was interesting and the dynamics and contents were right on target. I was able to work at my own pace and the exchanges in the forums were satisfactory. It has helped me to listen and understand other people, enriching me as a professional and as a person. In short, a positive and recommendable experience for those who work with people in palliative situations.”

“In my opinion, the Assessing and Responding to Wish to Advance Death (ERDAM) course is a valuable tool to enhance the ability of healthcare professionals in exploring and responding to wishes to advance death in patients with advanced and life-threatening illness. I consider participation in the online face-to-face sessions essential to maximize the potential of the course.
The course is a solid and elaborate opportunity to enrich the indispensable tools needed by professionals who aspire to better care for people with advanced illness. Moreover, in light of the LORE and the current change in the benefits deployed by the legislature, I believe that all professionals need to review our good practices, our attitudes and skills so as not to confuse suffering with requesting medical aid in dying (AMpM).”
